Jeans

Jeans is like the epitome of essentials, isn’t it ? You might not have a magenta top or a navy blue shirt but you’ll have several pairs of jeans. Jeans are like the go to pair of pants which makes the outfit better.

But have you thought what history does these pair of jeans hold ? Every thread has it’s roots and we dig into the roots of these denims and we came out with a lot of interesting facts that you might or might not know. We tried to summarise it to the best, hope you’ll like it.

So, basically Jeans are pants made from denim or dungaree cloths which are both cotton cloths and thus makes it comfortable to put on.
Jeans is a short form for “blue jeans” which was founded by Jacob Davis & Levi Strauss in 1873.
Yes I know ! It goes way back into the centuries.
The name Jeans come from the city Genoa in Italy, where the cotton heavy fabric called either jean or jeane were manufactured. Weavers in the french city called Nimes tried to copy the fabric but failed and the fabric they made came to be known as denim well actually “de nimes” or “from Nimes”.
In 1848 when the Gold Rush began in California, among the others the miners protested for stronger fabric that could withstand the working conditions. So, one of the tailors who decided to make these clothes was Jacob Davis and thus purchased cloth in large quantity from Levis Strauss &Co. But, because of lack of money he couldn’t continue with his idea so Jacob shared this idea with Levi in 1872 and suggested that the two of them hold patent. So, on May 20,1873 the two men received the patent number.
Jeans were initially made for workers and were designed to fit loosely over-all. It got popularized in 1950s when James Dean wore jeans without bib in “Rebel Without a Cause” and that became the symbol of youth rebellion. Became more acceptable in 1960s and a part of fashion in 1970s.

Jeans is that pair of cloth which is worn by people of every age and gender. And that’s the most wonderful part about clothes they don’t discriminate. Now, over the time jeans has become a fashion symbol. The options for jeans never end from overall loose fitting pants to skin fit, from dungarees to denim shorts and skirts.

Everything is beautiful but it is not beautiful for the environment, the chemicals used to dye jeans are very harmful and the chemical washes require as much as 1,800 gallons of water per pair of jeans.

Jeans are no doubt fashion friendly and social friendly but definitely not environment friendly. The first pair of jeans was made from discarded cotton t-shirts. There are brands such as Guess trying to reduce the environment waste and thus they started with the Go Green scheme in which men and women to recycle their denim and they’ll get 30% off on a new pair of jeans.

So, let’s try and style in fashion and environment friendly ways.
